WASHINGTON – Thursday the U.S. House voted for House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) FY 2014 Budget Resolution. Through a responsible, pro-growth approach to securing America’s future, the Ryan Budget balances the nation’s budget in ten years without raising taxes. By ending wasteful spending, reforming our tax code, and addressing the real drivers of our debt, the Ryan Budget reduces deficits by $4.6 trillion over the next ten years.

Among other policy options, the budget resolution incorporates a policy based on H.R. 824, the Federal Workforce Reduction Through Attrition Act, legislation introduced by U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo).  According to the budget resolution, this policy will save $49 billion over the course of ten years by gradually reducing the size of the federal civilian workforce by ten percent.  The policy limits new federal hires to one employee for every three that retire or leave service, achieving billions in savings without forcing any current federal employees out of the job.

U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis issued the following statement after passage of the bill:

“The House Republican budget presents a vision that secures a strong and prosperous America for current and future generations. This budget grows our economy, reduces our deficit, advocates for an energy independent North America and expands opportunity for Americans.

“As a country $16 trillion in debt, America is heading toward a debt crisis unless we do something now to stop reckless borrow-and-spend policies.  Unlike the President’s past budgets, the Ryan Budget outlines logical steps to balance our budget without raising taxes and gets our country back on the road to financial security.

“I am proud to support the House Republican budget plan. This is the plan that puts America back on track. This is the plan to renew America.”

The President’s budget is slated to be released in April, two months behind schedule. The U.S. Senate Democrat Budget – the first in over four years – is expected to be voted on in the coming days.
