U.S. Representative Cynthia Lummis voted with the majority of the House, 235 to 191, today to pass H.R. 2775, the No Subsidies without Verification Act. The bill would prevent any spending on Obamacare subsidies, projected to start in January 2014, until a process is put in place to verify the income and eligibility of people receiving those subsidies.

In a rush to get Obamacare up and running, the Administration left it open to rampant fraud by using an “honor system” under which individuals would self-report their income and eligibility for tax subsidies. The subsidies are already estimated to cost taxpayers close to $1.1 trillion over ten years.

“The only thing worse for our nation than Obamacare right now is leaving Obamacare’s massive new entitlement benefit open to fraud and abuse,” said Rep. Lummis. “This Administration is so desperate to get people to sign up to Obamacare that they are willing to put billions of tax dollars at risk in a broken program. It’s unbelievable that we have to pass a bill just to tell this President to follow his own law and only hand out subsidies to people who are actually eligible.”
